Nick - 4 Months

4 months old, I just can't believe it.  Although I should, considering how Nick is rolling all over the place and today, for the first time, wanted to face outward in the baby wrap.  I had him facing in like I usually do, all snuggled in, and he kept twisting his head back and forth and trying to wriggle out of the wrap!  So I turned him around so he could see what was going on at the library and he was happy as a clam.

Size:  Nick's 4 month appointment was Tuesday (I obviously wrote this several weeks ago and am just now posting it).  He is 27 inches long (93rd percentile) and 17 pounds, 7 ounces (91st percentile).  He just passed big brother, who was only 17 pounds at his 4 month checkup.  Such a big boy!  I still have him mostly in 6 month clothes, but in Gap he's also wearing 6-12 months and in Carter's he can wear 9 months too.

Likes: Nick likes rolling over from his back to his tummy.  He likes being held up so that he can see everything that's going on.  He likes to pull mom's hair and watch what his big brother is doing.  He doesn't like to chew on squishy things (like Sophie the giraffe) like Alex did, instead he prefers soft things like burp rags and blankets with satiny edges.  Nick has discovered his toes, and thinks they're great fun.  Every time I change his diaper he grabs one foot in each hand.  :)  He loves to "talk" and even "sing" when he's in a happy mood.  He also likes doing "crunches", although he cannot sit up on his own yet.  We let him try out the high chair and he loved watching everyone eat!  He also likes playing in the stander.

Dislikes: Getting stuck on his tummy...he can't quite figure out how to roll back over!  And, understandably, he also dislikes when big brother runs over his head with a toy train (true story).

Sleeping: Just last week, a few days before he turned 4 months, Nick took an afternoon nap IN HIS CRIB for the first time ever.  And he slept for an hour and a half!  The next day, two hours!  It's been glorious.  It's not consistent yet (he only napped about half an hour today for some reason).  But I will take it.  He's doing great.  Still mostly sleeping through the night, although he does occasionally wake up for a 2:30 feeding or so.

Eating: Nick is still happily nursing every 2 or 3 hours during the day.  It takes at least half an hour to get him down at night, and he wriggles, twists, and swats his arms around (which is super fun for nursing) but then he settles in.

Nick Jay - 3 Months

Well Nicholas Jay, you are officially three months old!  (3 months and one week at this point, will you please slow down.  I am your mother so you have to listen to me.)

You have transitioned to size 2 diapers and even occasionally wear a size 3 at night.  I'm thinking of purchasing some more cloth diapers so that you can join your brother in wearing those soon.  I was worried how they would fit you when you were just a teeny newborn, but you are not so teeny anymore!  I don't keep track any longer of how often you nurse but if your thighs are any indication you're growing just fine.  :)

You are such a smiley, happy baby.  You love to talk and coo at everyone, and you've even started to laugh.  You still love to snuggle.  You generally only nap during the day if you are in your carseat or someone is holding you.  I don't mind it, because you have become a CHAMP at sleeping through the night!  I thank you for this!  Sometimes I check on you two or even three times in the mornings before you are awake and ready to nurse.

Although you are generally my smiley, happy boy, you do have some dislikes.  You DO NOT LIKE TO BE COLD.  This means you don't like when someone touches you when their hands are cold (winter weather is here kiddo, so this will be a tough one!).  It also means that when it's time for you to get out of the bathtub you HOWL.  It is very sad.  And lately evenings have been pretty rough, and I think it's because of your lack of naps.  We'll be working on that!

When we were in DC you rolled over from back to tummy for the first time, and you've done it several times since.  You love to wiggle all over the floor and your crib, and you love to kick your legs.  You are such a sweet baby, my Nicholas Jay!  We love you!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Alex!

Alex Henry, you are TWO YEARS OLD!  How in the world did that happen?!  You continue to bring us joy every single day and we love you more than words can express.

You are talking all the time now.  Much of it is not discernible, but you are getting really good!  Your new favorite word is "bulldozer", and you say it pretty darn well!  You also like to say "whoa, whoa, whoa" when you are requesting to be picked up, and "down" when you want to go downstairs, be put down, or want little brother to be put down.

You are so adventurous.  You can climb halfway up the rope ladder and the rock climbing wall at the playground, and you show no fear when going down the big slide all by yourself.  You love to play in water and sand, and being outdoors in general.  You think Dad's tool shed is the best thing ever.  :)

You love toys, books, and trucks (all things that "go", really).  You are so smart, and goofy, and very sweet and cuddly too.  We love you so much, Alexander.  Happy 2nd Birthday.

The garage with Dad?  Nothing better!

At your very first wedding...you did great, Al!

Nick - Two Months

Our Nicholas Jay is two months old!  He is such a happy, content baby!  He loves to coo and talk, play on his activity mat, and smile at familiar people.  The poor thing has cradle cap just like Alex did, which is driving me crazy but seems to not bother him.  He has huge, beautiful eyes that I still can't determine the color of.  Sometimes they are that baby blue-gray, other times they look hazelnut brown.  Only time will tell I guess!  He has started to "tick-tock" in his crib and move himself 90 degrees.   He just had his first vacation away to the White Mountains and he did fantastic in the car, only waking up to nurse once each way.  We are so in love with our little Nick!

Size: Nick had his two-month appointment (complete with oodles of shots, poor baby) on October 7.  He weighed 13 pounds, 15 ounces!  No wonder my back is tired, haha.  And he is over 24 inches long.  These stats put him in the 91st and 93rd percentile.  He can still wear 0-3 month clothes but most of them look a bit like capri pants and three-quarter-length sleeves.  The 3-6 month stuff fits well, although still a bit bunchy.  He is still wearing size 1 diapers, but I think once we finish these up we are moving to size 2.

Likes: Nick still loves snuggling on my chest.  To get him to sleep once he's riled up, he likes a very specific combination of wiggling his bottom up and down and patting his back, done simultaneously.  I am now a pro at this.  Nick likes being in the baby ktan wrap much more now that I've switched to "hug" position instead of "kangaroo" position.  He loves batting and kicking at the animals on his activity mat, especially the giraffe.  He loves to coo and talk and smile when you hold him up close to your face.  He is very alert!

Dislikes: Being cold and when he has been awake for too long.  Having his nails clipped.  Being put down when he's all snuggly and asleep in your arms.

Sleeping and Eating: Nick has started doing extremely well at night.  Last night for example I fed him while we were eating dinner (he literally could not wait any longer), which was about 7:00.  He nursed from both sides, which is something Alex rarely ever did, and then he went to sleep on my chest around 8:00.  I put him in his crib around 9:30 and then he didn't wake up to eat again until 5:00!  Some nights he still wakes up at 2:00 or 3:00, and other nights he wants to eat closer to midnight once more before really going down for the night but still...excellent progress!  :)

October 8, 2014 (they are one day late, poor baby had too many shots the day before!)

"Hello, there."

My favorite face!  The little love!

Those big eyes and beautiful lashes...be still my heart.

Alex - 23 Months

One of Alex's best little buddies turned 2 today.  He is exactly one month older than Al and his parents have become some very dear friends.  (They were, in fact, in our childbirth class over two years ago!)  Since little Adrian has turned two, it is a very bittersweet reminder that Alex is next.  We are simultaneously overjoyed at the little boy that our sweet Alex is becoming and still reeling that almost two years has gone by so fast.  Wow.

This past month Alex has continued to climb onto things, push furniture around, "fix" stuff, get into messes, get stuck in places, fall off of things, fall into things, and of course make us laugh.  He loves working in the basement with Chris, even to the point where he turned down the temp on our hot water heater without our knowledge (we took cool showers for three days before we realized what had happened).

He has started to show a teeny bit of jealously towards little brother.  Not aggressive, but definitely wanting to be picked up more and wanting me to put Nick down more.  He will copy anything that Chris does (hammering, measuring, drilling) and even things that I do (like wanting to have a cup of coffee too).  Alex still loves books and has a new favorite: Curious George.  A friend brought him a book when Nick was born and he loved it right away.  Alex's napping has gotten much better, and he will often take a book with him to his crib to look at before he's ready to lie down.

Alex is a ham, and a goofball, a smartypants and a cuddle bug, and we just love him to pieces.  :)

Alex is still very into "his baby".  He pulled it right up into the double stroller next to him!

Alex loved riding in the double stroller with Nick at the park.  Although he still liked the playground better, of course!

Watching a little Curious George on PBS while mom makes scrambled eggs!
